Caribou

Clicking on the photos enlarges them.  Photos are taken as you come down the hill.  They have been taken over several years, so conditions shown will vary depending on what was happening the day the particular photo was taken.  Photos looking back up the hill will be described as such.

Overview

  • Rated:
  • Type of trail:  Novice cruiser
  • Head down the Ant Hill, passing Whitetail, then take the final left to Goat Haunt and Caribou.  The trail then heads back across the mountain again, crossing Whitetail, then passing Silvertip and Kodiak.  The last pitch is a wonderful area to practice drills as it is wide, the snow is usually excellent, and the traffic level is low.
  • Tip:  Since the access to Caribou is via the intermediate Ant Hill, the more timid can cut out some of Ant Hill by crossing in front of the Summit House and heading as if to go to Inspiration.  Before the fork between Inspiration and Big Ravine, there is a road that cuts BACK across North Bowl Face, below the Summit House, and onto the Ant Hill.  This cuts out about half of the Ant Hill.  Be sure to check up hill as you cross North Bowl Face and before entering on to the Ant Hill itself.
  • Tip:  For the more adventurous, the trees on the right hand side of the last section of Caribou past the connection to Gray Wolf have some nice powder.  You'll either end up back on Caribou or on Whitetail, depending on your route.

View approaching Caribou:

Bear to the left at the bottom of the Ant Hill.  The right hand fork is Russ's Street.

Continue on to the left, bypassing Goat Haunt:

Looking back towards the top, just after leaving the fork for Goat Haunt:

Pass Whitetail, on the right and head across the hill:

You'll pass under the chair at Silvertip (looking back):

There is a short drop, then Kodiak.  Caribou continues descending gently, until you meet up with the connection from Gray Wolf.  (Looking back):

Looking down:

The final pitch is slightly steeper than what has come so far, and is a great place to practice your turning drills:
