Russ's Street

Clicking on the photos enlarges them.  Photos are taken as you come down the hill.  They have been taken over several years, so conditions shown will vary depending on what was happening the day the particular photo was taken.  Photos looking back up the hill will be described as such.

Overview

  • Rated:  Starts out as a , changes over to a at the Expressway intersection.
  • Type of trail:  Long way around, sort of the mountain "interstate" (as opposed to the trail of that name).  All North Bowl and most of the eastern side of the mountain will dump you on this eventually.
  • Heading down the Ant Hill, head straight ahead past the junction for Goat Haunt and past Moose.  There is a long flat section that you have to have speed for or you'll end up poling for quite a distance.  Straightline the slope that comes after Goat Haunt and you should make it.  There is another flat section after Over the Hill gang, so straightline your way the lower third of that pitch AND DON'T STOP at the Expressway junction and block the trail.  In fact, the whole lower section is narrow and people who want to converse need to pull way off to the side and not block traffic.  Wide, zig-zagging turns in the lower section are also not a good idea, as it prevents people from passing you and results in pile-ups when the person behind you mis-anticipates your rhythm.  If you need to control your speed due to conditions, this is the time your snow plow or hockey stop skid should come in handy.  Ski defensively and try to be predictable for those behind you.  Although it is their job to avoid you, during holiday periods, this may be difficult for them.  Pull aside (well off the trail) after making sure that there is not someone coming up just over your shoulder, and let any "gangs" pass if you are uncomfortable being in front of them.  Wait for traffic to clear, then resume.
  • There are TWO areas on the map designated as "Easiest Way Down" from the Summit.  The Russ's Street route is green for most of the way and the section which is blue is not very crowded.  However, this route is NOT FOR BEGINNING SKIERS.  Go over to the Easy Rider, Chair Six, or Chair Three areas for that.
