Back Nine

Clicking on the photos enlarges them.  Photos are taken as you come down the hill.  They have been taken over several years, so conditions shown will vary depending on what was happening the day the particular photo was taken.  Photos looking back up the hill will be described as such.

  • Rated:
  • Type of trail:  Heavily treed, steep area running alongside Hell Fire.
  • Coming off Chair One, head left towards Hell Fire.  Getting onto Hell Fire requires a bit of a straightline down towards Hell Fire because there is a bit of a hill where Hell Fire crosses the snowmobile track.  (DO NOT ASSUME THAT THESE GUYS WILL STOP!)  As you proceed along Hell Fire, you'll pass Picture Chutes, then Gray's Golf Course.  You can either enter via Gray's OR continue a few feet further on Hell Fire and jump in.
  • Do not ski this area alone.  The trees are tight, there is extremely limited cell service, the area is rarely skied, and the area is not overlooked by another trail.  If you hit a tree or fall in a tree well, they'll find you in the spring.
  • The Back Nine ends along Hell Fire.  There is no access to the Highway to Heaven traverse from this area.

Views of The Back Nine off Hell Fire:

The Back Nine is the treed area on the left.

Using a Gray's Golf Course approach:

The more-heavily treed area off to the right is The Back Nine.  You can continue down the ridge between the two areas and enter The Back Nine from any point.

Descending through Back Nine:

Looking up at Back Nine from various points along Hell Fire:

Pictures are as you descend Hell Fire, therefore looking up at Back Nine, moving left to right.

This last picture shows part of the easier, more open section of Back Nine.  Many people descend the Gray's Golf Course/Back Nine ridge and call it the Back Nine, but they are really skirting the true area.
